Do the moderators actually read things before they delete them here?

As many of you know, I've defended the moderation here on MyDD fairly consistently, even through the "questionable" moves that they have made on this website, such as front page diaries bashing the Democratic nominee for "preening", taking away rec privliges from Obama supporters en masse during the Democratic Primary.

It appears that I was giving certain moderators on this board too much leeway on my critisisms.

Lo and behold, the diary entitled "Bill Clinton: I am a racist" had it's name moderated and then was removed from the recommended list, with a lack of explanation from the moderation of the site.

I find this idea interesting in of itself; simply because it seemed that the diary; while re-igniting the primaries wars in some ways; had also opened some what of a dialouge on what had been a very touchy subject between Clintonistas and Obamanauts--namely, the issue of race in the primary campaign and how it hurt or helped each person running.

However, it seems that Jerome (or whatever mod) seems to have missed the boat on this one. Considering this message, sent to me, after the title of the diary was changed:

Last warning. Follow the guidelines -- no inflammatory post titles -- or go somewhere else.

It's a sad day when the adminstrators of a site are so in a rush to assert thier dominance that they look over a snark title of a diary defending Bill Clinton, then provide no rational explanation for thier actions. Nothing is done to trolls; yet grassrootsorganizer got banned. People with more venom than Harriet Christian continue to post here; but when I start a diary with a simple premise of defending a two term Democratic President, I get a slap in the wrist over the title; obviously a diary that was not read.

What an interesting day at MyDD.

Re: Do the moderators actually read (2.00 / 2)

"No inflammatory posts" is kind of a tough standard to meet. I mean, if title of your post was something like "Hitler was framed" or something universally incorrigible, I guess I can see why it would be censored or deleted.

But I thought your title was very eye-catching; it cut directly to the chase instead of playing the subtext game. When will we cut the bullshit and stand up against the press's attempt to, yet again, resurrect an empty racial controversy out of a primary that ended two months ago?

I think his post was meant to address the selective moderation that is occurring.  People have had openly homophobic diaries remain untouched, legitimate troll diaries go ignored, but a diary from a user with a great history here gets censored.  I mean look at the diary list right now.  chancecoke has a diary that is 100% plagiarized, copy and pasted from another source with no citations, and there it sits untouched.

As users, we deserve to know what is and isn't allowed here, because right now the rules are being enforced selectively.

Re: Do the moderators actually read things before (2.00 / 2)

Jerome, as I mentioned in this diary, there have been many diaries on this same subject. It would be a great help if you or one of the moderators addressed the issue in a diary.

The user-contributed section of this blog has been in disarray for quite awhile. Valuable contributers are continuing to write GBCW diaries and leaving the site. Trolls, like William Cooper, BlueDoggyDog (who is active in this thread), Jerome Freeze, chancecoke (who has a diary in the recent diary list), and their like trample unfettered over the conversation on this site.

It's time for me to take a break from this site. I'll check back in after the convention to see if things have improved. Hopefully, MYDD can return to its rightful place in the progressive blogosphere. I wish you luck.

There are a great many people on here who do nothing but cause trouble and they're never reprimanded. I wouldn't mind except for the fact that other people ARE reprimanded instead. I suppose what I'm saying is that perhaps banning should be at least in part based on the actual users' input. If every single comment made by a poster is rated as a 0 or a 1 by many users, perhaps that poster should be reprimanded or banned.

How is the new system coming along? Is it going to be coming soon?

If you saved HR's and TR's for abusive posts, then the mods could allow this place to police itself.  But as the Obama nation is too immature to handle this respobsiblity...

Re: Do the moderators actually read ... (2.00 / 1)

Now I'd normally be the last person to defend the moderation on this site, I've certainly criticized it before, but one of the main guidelines on the "About" page is:

* Titles of diaries should not be inflammatory, call out other users or the site, and will be deleted if not edited out, and the user banned.

The diary in question was the very definition of an "inflammatory title"--it was a title that's meant to catch attention, and get an immediate furious click with the lips hanging on "WHAT THE F--" and then the punchline hits.  The fact that the content was snark doesn't change that.

If I were to post a diary title saying, for example...  "Hillary Clinton really DID kill Vince Foster!" and follow it up with "...or so those crazies at LGF would have you believe." -- even if it's not meant to be serious, the title is still inflammatory.

The rule is in place to prevent people from getting into an arms race about who can get the most views by having the most inflammatory title.

"Earth would be better off if humans went extinct" "--okay but seriously let's talk about environmental policy."

"Homosexuality is an abomination against God" "But enough of what my crazy aunt tells her gay son once or twice a week, we should legalize gay marriage..."

etc.  We already see that, really.  Diaries with an innocuous title might get 4 comments in the same time as it takes a diary with a title that strikes controversy to hit 200.

Re: Do the moderators actually read ... (2.00 / 1)

The title only said what a lot of people are implying without having the guts to say it. I think there's the difference. If the press started circulating a story that maybe Hillary Clinton really did kill Vince Foster and someone posted a sardonic blog post entitled "Proof Hillary Made It Look Like A Suicide," it's pretty clear what the point was unless one was living under a rock. In a way, it's just like the New Yorker cover controversy. That's my take, anyway.

This website has always taken a heavy-handed approach to rec-list moderation.  Can't remember the last time a diary was ever removed from the daily kos rec list, but it happens all the time here, often more than once a day.

Re: Do the moderators actually read things before (2.00 / 3)

How is the title "Bill Clinton: I am a racist" snarky? A title can't be snarky if it depends on reading the diary to get the joke. The title is the title and by the sound of it, it was purposely inflammatory to get a reaction. And that's what's not allowed.

And speaking of titles, might want to change the title of this one since your diary actually wasn't deleted at all.

Re: Do the moderators actually read things before (none / 0)

Welcome to the banning of any defense of Bill. (well, apparently, anyway, who knew?)

I too got one of those warnings long ago when the primary was still on and the Obama supporters piled on to swiftboat Hillary after the Bosnia remark flap.

It was a 'free for all' here on MyDD that day to assassinate the character of Clinton, and I made the remark 'Let the lynching begin'.

Immediately someone called me racist and whined to some unknown moderator who deleted it and warned me.

Sometimes they never really read a comment or look at and consider the context, or they would have understood that speaking as I did, about a 'white woman's' political character was not at all even remotely 'racist' nor could it be construed to be.

It was, however, a 'real' POLITICAL 'lynching'.

I've used the banned 'word' twice now in one comment.  Perhaps I should compose my GBCW diary in preparation.

When we ban words, are we not akin to those who ban books?

Hell's bells, even the GOP didn't have to crucify Eisenhower's record in order to make Reagan their 'saint'. We can have two great ones, you know?
